The AusweisApp logo for Germany’s federal online identification app consists of a graphic symbol and the name. The symbol is a blue square frame with rounded corners containing two half-ring shapes separated vertically: the left one is green and the right one is light blue. Together they form an open ring with small gaps at the top and bottom. In the full version, the name AusweisApp appears next to the symbol in large blue letters, with the green wording “eID-Software des Bundes” below, or “Federal eID Software” in the English-language version. The graphic symbol is also used on its own as the app icon. In November 2023, the app was renamed from AusweisApp2 to AusweisApp and received an updated visual identity at the same time. The basic form of the symbol, with its green and light blue half-rings, remains in the current version.
AusweisApp is Germany’s federal eID software for using the online ID function. It can read data from the German identity card (Personalausweis), the electronic residence permit and the eID card for citizens of the EU and EEA, verify a user’s identity online, and transfer data between the identity document and an online service over an encrypted connection. The app has been developed by Governikus since 2014 on behalf of Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and is distributed as open-source software under the EUPL licence. It is available for smartphones, tablets and computers and is used for identification with digital public services as well as with banks, insurance companies and other organisations. In app stores, the current version is also listed under the name AusweisApp Bund, while the official name of the software itself remains AusweisApp.
