The Wikimedia Foundation logo, used by the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, consists of a graphic mark and a wordmark. The mark is monochrome: an open circular arc forms an almost complete ring, inside which an open book with a vertical “spine” is shown, with a circle above it. Next to it is the large word “WIKIMEDIA” in all caps in a sans-serif typeface, and below it the word “FOUNDATION” in all caps in a thinner weight with increased letter spacing. The logo is used in black or white depending on the background.
Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is a U.S. non-profit organization founded on June 20, 2003 by Jimmy Wales to support Wikipedia and other projects of the Wikimedia movement. The Foundation provides and develops the infrastructure: servers and site availability, development of the MediaWiki platform, protection of domains and trademarks, as well as legal and organizational support for the global community of editors and volunteers. Through grants and programs, the Foundation helps partners and local organizations advance free knowledge and also works on areas related to safety, sustainability, and accessibility of projects in different countries. The Wikimedia Foundation is funded mainly by donations and does not rely on advertising as its main source of revenue; the name Wikimedia is derived from the words wiki and media.
