The logo of Nature, an international scientific journal, consists of the brand name set in lowercase black letters in a serif typeface. The current version was introduced in October 2019 as part of a major redesign of the journal and became the eleventh version of the logo in its history. It is based on Harding, a typeface created specifically for Nature, although the lettering was further customized for the logo: the “r” received a rounded terminal and the “a” a distinctive tail, both referencing earlier versions of the mark. The lowercase “n” preserves the way the name has been styled for around half a century. The logo appears in black on light backgrounds and in white on dark or colored backgrounds. The 2019 redesign also removed the red bar that had long been used on the website, making the visual system better suited to digital platforms.
Nature is an international weekly scientific journal from the United Kingdom, whose first issue was published on November 4, 1869. It was founded by astronomer Norman Lockyer and publisher Alexander Macmillan, with the original aim of introducing both scientists and a wider audience to new scientific discoveries and research. Today, Nature publishes peer-reviewed research across a wide range of scientific and technological fields, as well as news, analysis, and commentary on developments affecting the scientific community. The journal is the flagship publication of Nature Portfolio, part of the international publishing group Springer Nature, and remains the central title in a large family of specialized scientific journals.
