The Kakao Pay logo, used by the South Korean payment service, appears on a bright yellow background and features a dark gray speech-bubble symbol and the word “pay”. A separate black “kakaopay” wordmark is also used: the “kakao” part follows the signature styling of the core Kakao brand, while “pay” is set in a bolder typeface. The name combines the Kakao brand with the English word pay, directly pointing to the service’s payment focus. This visual identity is tied to the Kakao ecosystem built around KakaoTalk, where the speech-bubble symbol has long been a recognizable part of the brand’s graphics.
Kakao Pay launched in September 2014 as a simple payment service, added money transfers through KakaoTalk in 2016, and was spun off as an independent company, Kakao Pay Corp., in April 2017. The service then significantly expanded its range of offerings, adding overseas payments, credit product comparison, asset management tools, reward points, investment solutions through Kakao Pay Securities, and insurance services through Kakao Pay Insurance. In November 2021, the company was listed on the KOSPI, and in the following years it continued to expand its financial ecosystem, including currency exchange, overseas cash withdrawals, insurance services, and new lending products. Today, Kakao Pay is no longer just a payment method, but a major South Korean fintech platform that brings together everyday payments, transfers, and a wide range of financial services within a single ecosystem.
