The Mastercard logo consists of two overlapping circles—red and orange—creating a rich amber intersection. This design has represented connection and exchange since the brand’s founding in 1968. The “mastercard” wordmark was removed in 2019, so the symbol now stands alone, reflecting its high recognition—over 80 % of people can identify it without text. The logo underwent a redesign in 2016, switching to lowercase typography and simplified geometry, and received its final update in 2019 to optimize colors and form for digital screens and mobile devices.
Mastercard’s history dates back to 1966 as the Interbank Card Association—a collaboration of banks offering an alternative to BankAmericard. The brand was renamed Mastercard in 1979, moving away from the Master Charge identity. Today, it is one of the world’s largest payment networks, enabling contactless and digital transactions in over 210 countries. Mastercard does not issue cards itself, but provides a technology platform for banks and financial institutions. Processing billions of transactions annually, the company leads in innovations such as digital wallets, contactless payments, and emerging-market solutions, continuing to expand global access to electronic payments.
