The DeepSeek logo features a blue whale facing left. Next to it is the brand name “deepseek” written in lowercase using a modern sans-serif font. Some of the letters have distinctive cuts and breaks, making the logo easily recognizable. The whale was chosen as a unique visual element that helps distinguish the brand from competitors and emphasizes a clear identity. According to the creators, they wanted to move away from the abstract and impersonal symbols often seen in the AI industry.
DeepSeek was founded in July 2023 in Hangzhou by Chinese entrepreneur Lian Wenfeng. The company develops its own large language models (LLMs), such as DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-V3, known for high performance and cost-efficient training. DeepSeek products are distributed under the open-source MIT license, which quickly gained interest from the global tech community. In early 2025, DeepSeek launched a chatbot that became one of the most downloaded apps in the US, securing its position as a significant player in the global AI market.
