Where and how can I use it?

SVG format

It’s a lightweight vector format (in kilobytes) that’s ideal for use on websites, in mobile apps, and for print. Thanks to its scalability to any size without loss of quality, it can be scaled from the size of an icon to a banner on a building. The file is easily editable in popular graphics editors such as Figma, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and others, and opens in Photoshop without any issues.

PNG format

It’s a raster format with support for transparent backgrounds, making it ideal for use on websites, web graphics, in presentations, documents, and social media. PNG preserves high image quality at its original size, but may lose sharpness and become blurred when enlarged. The file easily opens and is used in popular editors such as Photoshop, GIMP, Canva, Figma, and most standard image viewers.

The GitHub logo for the code hosting and collaboration platform consists of a graphic mark and a wordmark. The mark is a circle with the cut-out silhouette of GitHub’s mascot, Octocat: a profile with a large oval head, small ears, and a curved tail; this pictogram is called Invertocat. Next to it, the name GitHub is written as one word without spaces, with capital “G” and “H”, set in a sans-serif typeface. The logo is used in black, white, and green; the Invertocat mark has only been refined in small details over time, while the GitHub wordmark has been updated several times. The name GitHub comes from Git (a version control system) and the word hub.

GitHub, Inc. is a service where developers and teams store Git repositories, track change history, and build projects together through pull requests and code review, issues, discussions, wikis, and automation for checks and builds. The platform launched in 2008 and was created by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, P. J. Hyett, and Scott Chacon; in 2018 GitHub was acquired by Microsoft and operates as its subsidiary. GitHub is used by more than 150 million developers, and the platform hosts hundreds of millions of repositories; it is widely used for both open-source projects and enterprise development.
