The Marshall logo, for a brand of audio equipment and guitar amplifiers, is a black square containing the brand name in white, rendered in a connected handwritten script. The letters feature smooth, rounded lines with a noticeable slant and elongated strokes, especially in the initial “M” and the final two “l” letters. On amplifiers, speakers, headphones, and other products, the brand’s script wordmark is used without the square background. Depending on the application, it can be white or black. The name Marshall comes from the surname of the founder, Jim Marshall. The first amplifiers of the early 1960s used different forms of branding, while the recognizable handwritten wordmark appeared on Marshall products in the mid-1960s and subsequently became a permanent part of the brand’s visual identity.
Marshall is a British audio brand whose history began in 1962 in Hanwell, London, where Jim and Terry Marshall created the company’s first amplifier. Production expanded rapidly and was moved to Bletchley in the late 1960s, where the Marshall factory still operates today and continues to produce well-known amplifier models. Over time, the brand expanded beyond professional guitar equipment into home and portable speakers, headphones, and other consumer audio products, while also developing Marshall Records and its own recording studio. In 2023, Marshall Amplification merged with Sweden’s Zound Industries, resulting in the formation of Marshall Group AB, which brought professional music equipment and consumer audio products together under the Marshall brand.
