The Food Lion supermarket chain logo consists of the brand name and a lion figure. In the current version, the name FOOD LION appears in blue in a bold sans-serif typeface, and in the main horizontal layout a black lion silhouette is placed between the two words. The animal is shown in profile and is presented in a way that resembles a heraldic image, which makes the mark look cohesive and easy to recognize even without fine details. In addition to the main horizontal version, Food Lion also uses a vertical layout in which the lion is positioned above the brand name. The company began rolling out the current version of the logo across all stores in 2014. In the official description of the update, it was also specifically noted that the new sign preserves Food Lion’s historic lion figure and signature blue color.
Food Lion is an American regional supermarket chain founded in Salisbury, North Carolina, in 1957 under the name Food Town. In 1983, the company changed its name to Food Lion when it began expanding into markets where the name Food Town was already being used by other retail chains. Today, the brand is part of Ahold Delhaize USA, keeps its headquarters in Salisbury, and operates more than 1,100 stores across 10 states in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The company employs more than 82,000 people. Over the decades, Food Lion has grown from a regional grocery business into one of the largest supermarket chains in the eastern United States, while keeping the lion image as a permanent and recognizable part of its brand.
