Stanford University’s logo combines a large S with an image of a tree. The letter has straight sides and angled corners, with a light outline defining its shape. The main two-colour version uses Cardinal red and Palo Alto green. The tree refers to El Palo Alto, which also appears on the university seal. The version of the mark used today was updated in 2014. In addition to the standalone emblem, the identity includes the Stanford serif wordmark on its own and horizontal arrangements with the S and tree to the left of the name. Red and black lettering is available for light backgrounds, and white for dark backgrounds. The emblem also has single-colour versions. Another element of the university’s identity is the historic circular seal, featuring a tree and the name around its edge.
Stanford University is a private research university in California, United States. Leland and Jane Stanford founded it in 1885 in memory of their son, and the first students began classes in 1891. Its full legal name is Leland Stanford Junior University. The campus developed on the family’s ranch near Palo Alto. The university brings together programmes in the humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, medicine, law, business and education. Its history is closely linked to the development of Silicon Valley: faculty encouraged practical applications of research and the creation of companies, and its alumni included the founders of Hewlett-Packard.
